ENCOUNTERING THE CITY (2006)

Two women silently encounter the city of Melbourne. They blindly choose places on the map for each other to venture on a quest of belonging / disconnection and becoming / identity.

One woman operates a video camera to function as a witness and guardian to the other as they challenge the silent protocols of the city. The project is planned as an ongoing process of exchange.

“When I encounter new places I always feel great but also guilty that I may disturb somebody's nest. That’s why I force myself to stay in places that seem to be meant as my nest. There I can spend time enough for me to no longer pretend that I don’t understand the rules. I try to swallow all the rules with ease, so I can finally spit them out into a garden of new possibilities.”
